Well, two are new & available for the first time to the public - The Eyes of Miles Davis, June 1969 & Santana, On Stage, 1981. The Miles Outside, June 1969 is well-known, even iconic, but is available at ICON Collectibles for the first time as a fine art print in open and limited editions.

In this second portrait from June 1969, Don Hunstein provides an insightful study of the psychological power and mystery powering Miles’s creative imagination. Here is the artist unmasked, brow furrowed, caught in intense mid-thought, his hands framing both his face and the force of the brilliant ideation shining through his eyes.

When photographer Don Hunstein shot this portrait of Miles outside Davis’s home on West 77th Street in June 1969, the jazz legend was at the midpoint between the sessions which would produce his two revolutionary jazz-fusion masterpieces: “In A Silent Way” (recorded in February ‘69) and “Bitches Brew” (recorded in August ‘69). Davis’s recent move to electrified instruments is echoed in his futurist fashion sensibility. The button-down black & white cool of bebop Miles has made way for a psychedelic patchwork vest and custom-made wrap-around shades.

By 1981, Carlos Santana — one of the most influential and immediately recognizable guitarists of all-time — had achieved and sustained international success for his patented blend of rock, jazz & blues with his distinct Latin-flavored sound. Whether working as a solo artist, collaborating with musical legends like Alice Coltrane or John McLaughlin, or powering hits for his eponymous multi-platinum band, Santana has always brought qualities of spiritual truth and beauty to his music. This on-stage portrait of Carlos, snapped by photograph Art Maillett during a Dr. Pepper Festival performance in 1981, is classic vintage Santana, the young master channeling enlightenment on the fretboard of his battered signature six-string to the delight of an unseen audience off-camera, sharing the inner mounting rapture of the guitarist.

I kinda like the “furrowed brow” Miles. He looks somewhat like an ordinary person, rather than the brilliant jazz musician & powerful celebrity we all think we know.

What else? I’ve been doing some spiritual visualization lately. Twice a week I walk by the Ferrari dealership and visualize myself driving away in this…

What do you think? There’s only one little thing which seems to block my visualization. Everytime, I visualize myself behind the wheel - it’s not me - it’s Sam Gomez, sitting behind the wheel & he’s eating a sandwich! I can’t make out what kind of sandwich. He looks pretty cool. I don’t know what to think. Any suggestions or insights would be most welcome.

Stay well & safe & look both ways. It could be Sam or me tooling down up Madison in that red Ferrari.

Steve
