About Leo:
LEO SACKS has supervised or produced over 250 compilations, reissues, remixes and new recordings for Sony BMG Legacy’s critically acclaimed Rhythm & Soul series, which has been vital to preserving the works of such American masters as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Isley Brothers and Bill Withers, while also introducing them to a new generation.
This fall, Leo compiled and produced Love, Luther, the first career-spanning collection by Luther Vandross. He is currently collaborating with Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, the visionary songwriters, producers and founders of Philadelphia International Records, on the forthcoming Legacy boxed set, Love Train: The Story of Philly Soul.
As an independent producer, Leo and Ray Bardani recently produced the debut album by The London Souls, a new American rock band. As a songwriter, Leo co-wrote three songs with Emilio Castillo on Tower of Power’s most recent album, Oakland Zone (Or Music). He has also collaborated with John Magnie of the subdudes and Wanda Vaughn of The Emotions.
Leo has enjoyed a successful career as journalist as well. He has written about popular culture for Billboard, the Village Voice, People and The New York Times Book Review. From 1993 to 1999 he was a news writer and producer for Tom Brokaw and Brian Williams at NBC Nightly News, and was based at the United Nations as a field producer for the international Reuters Television news service during the first Gulf War. During the Eighties, he was a reporter on the city desk of The New York Post, and was a broadcast news writer and producer for CNN, CBS Morning News and CBS Radio Network. A native New Yorker, he lives along the mighty Hudson River, in Cold Spring, New York.
