Legacy Recordings Podcast : Sam Cooke

In this edition of the Legacy Podcast, we explore the comedy and music of jazz performer and comedian, Thomas Fats Waller and the black soul pioneer, Sam Cooke!

Simply put: Sam Cooke invented soul music. One of the first artists to have mass appeal with both black and white audiences, Cooke combined his gospel musical roots with the harmony-based sounds made popular by groups like the Ink Spots. One of the first musical personalities to bring social issues into the spotlight, Cooke paved the way for many outspoken artists during the Civil Rights Movement and beyond.

Thomas Fats Waller, along with Louis Armstrong, was the greatest combination of improvisational genius and show-stopping entertainer ever to spring from the world of jazz. Like Armstrong, the pianist/organist and singer/songwriter Waller was a widely influential soloist and vocalist, as well as a highly popular bandleader.

Be sure to get acquainted with Sam Cooke’s legacy through all of his classic tunes, available at iTunes and on CD, today! And don’t forget to check out Legacy’s first ever box set compilation of Fats Waller’s greatest material, If You Got To Ask, You Ain’t Got It!
