Their reputation rests to no small degree on the guitarists who passed through on the way to greater glory: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. But The Yardbirds were more than the warm-up for Cream and Led Zeppelin, more than the primer for Air Guitar 101. With Clapton, they stretched the boundaries of British blues beyond slavish imitation. When they went Òcommercial,Ó as on ÒFor Your Love,Ó they took genre-bending risks. A thousand garage bands tried to emulate them, but none could match the fearless experimentation that made them such an essential group.
