After scoring their first hit with “Tonight I Fell in Love,” The Tokens turned to a folk song called “Winoweh,” which had been a hit for The Weavers. With a Rock beat and a haunting vocal performance, the song was retitled “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and gave this talented group (Neil Sedaka had been an early member) their biggest hit. Members of The Tokens went on to write and produce for The Chiffons, Randy and The Rainbows, and The Happenings.
