Simon & Garfunkel were among the biggest artists in pop music at the end of the 1960s. Now there was friction growing between them, and friction growing throughout the country. Simon’s song was about mending wounds, and it was still high on the charts when Nixon invaded Cambodia and students were gunned down at Kent State. Much to the surprise of the two artists, Clive Davis chose it as the lead single from the duo’s new album, a judgment ratified by the armful of Grammy Awards “Bridge Over Troubled Water” earned in 1971—and by its lasting place in pop music history.
