Donovan: Sunshine Superman

After gaining notoriety as the U.K.’s answer to (or knockoff of) Bob Dylan with such gentle acoustic anthems as “Catch The Wind,” Donovan became the bard of spaced-out whimsy. His brand of folk-rock was ornate and playful and, as produced by Britpop master Mickie Most, utterly beguiling. His Sunshine Superman album is one for the time capsule, capturing the beatific (“The Trip”) and ominous (“Season Of The Witch”) moods of the mid-’60s. As the decade rolled on, he became enamored with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and got even more mystical and elliptical. Who else would have named a song “Epistle To Dippy?”
