The New Kids were the creation of Maurice Starr, an entrepreneur whose earlier charges, New Edition, slipped away from him after striking gold. In response, Starr rustled up five kids from the Boston suburbs, called them New Kids On The Block (originally Nynuk) and inked them to an airtight contract. No one paid much attention until a Florida station turned their fourth single, “Please Don’t Go Girl,” into a hit. From 1988 until New Kids mania’s abrupt end two years later, the lads churned out an insanely successful run of teen-targeted, critic-flummoxing hit singles (“Step By Step” their biggest), albums, videos, concerts—and (see sidebar) dolls, books and comics.
