The Ames Brothers were on of the most popular and influential vocal quartets of the 1950’s with big hits like “Melodie D’Amour” and “The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane.” In the mid-sixties, Ed Ames was co-starring in the TV series Daniel Boone, and put two solo records in the Top Twenty, this and “Who Will Answer?”

This evocative track was first cut for an album titled Sweet and Savage more than five years before its success as a single. Its utter simplicity and directness of emotion than transcends any language won it airplay as an LP cut. It attracted so much positive response that RCA released it as a 45 and, before long, Brazilian brothers Aenor and Natalicio Lima had a Top Ten hit.

Their reputation rests to no small degree on the guitarists who passed through on the way to greater glory: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. But The Yardbirds were more than the warm-up for Cream and Led Zeppelin, more than the primer for Air Guitar 101. With Clapton, they stretched the boundaries of British blues beyond slavish imitation. When they went Òcommercial,Ó as on ÒFor Your Love,Ó they took genre-bending risks. A thousand garage bands tried to emulate them, but none could match the fearless experimentation that made them such an essential group.

French-Canadian pop is a world unto itself, with its own charts, labels and domestic stars. It took former teen sensation Celine Dion (nicknamed “la p’tite Québecoise”) years and years of hard work to reach commercial export velocity, and once she did there was simply no stopping her. Two years after her English singing debut, the
hard-working Dion’s conquest of America began in earnest with 1992’s Peabo Bryson duet, “Beauty And The Beast.” That Disney tune helped carry Celine’s
self-titled second English album to the top. From that same album, “Because You Loved Me” would become one of adult contemporary music’s all-time best-selling hits.
